MidAmerican Nuclear Energy Company has made a decision to end its pursuit of a nuclear energy facility in Payette County, Idaho.
We at MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company, the parent of MidAmerican Nuclear Energy Company, continue to believe that nuclear energy must be an important part of the nation's energy future. However, consumers expect reasonably priced energy, and the company's due diligence process has led to the conclusion that it does not make economic sense to pursue the project at this time. The decision is based on economic considerations and not on issues related to the suitability of the Idaho site.
Based on MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company's commitment to provide customers with safe, reliable, reasonably priced and environmentally conscious energy, we are disappointed that the present economics of building the next generation of nuclear power plants are not in our customers' best interests.
We sincerely appreciated the support that local officials and community leaders have shown over the past several months. We also appreciated the opportunity to get to know the people of Payette County and the surrounding areas.
Please accept my thanks if you attended our community information meeting Dec. 20, 2007, in Payette. The level of interest and involvement of the community during the exploratory work we were doing are a testament to the care and concern residents have for Payette County, which will continue to be an asset of the community and serve it well.
Again, thank you for your hospitality.
Bill Fehrman, President, MidAmerican Nuclear Energy Company
